No, I don't because I just want him to learn to enjoy reading, and I think it's up to him to choose whatever he wants to read.

My mother, I think, kind of forced me to read some of the books that I had to read and it kind of made me not like books.

Back when I was in college, I took a class called The Joy of Children's Literature.

 - Back when 조금 많이 지난 과거라면 Back을 붙여준다.

Among the lessons from that class, the one that has stayed with me to this day  is to allow children the freedom to choose their own books.

 - the one that has stayed with me 지금까지도 머릿속에 남아있는

 - that the has stayed with me for a long time 그런 생각을 한 지 꽤 됐어

 - allow somebody ~ 누구에게 ~를 허용하다

Many parents try to take a hand in their children's book choices.

 - to take a hand in~ ~에 관여하다, = play a role

My parents take a hand in all of my decision.

But, the class emphasized the importance of giving kids the authority to choose their own books.

 - emphasize the importance of 중요성을 강조하다

 - authority 권한, 권위

By(or Through) reading, children interact with the author with themselves, and with other readers.

 - By reading (수단) 독서를 함으로써

 - Thourgh read (과정) 독서라는 과정을 통해

 - interact with~ ~와 소통하다 / 이후의 with 는 생략해도 되지만 강조를 위해 모두 사용.

Through this process, they learn social skills and develop the ability to decide what is right on their own.

 - social skills  사회성

 - ability to decide what is right on their own 사리분별력

I eventually develope the ability to do it myself.

I feel the same way.  저도 그래요.

That makes sense.  극공감할 때) 말이 되네요.
